Deadly Deception: General Electric, Nuclear Weapons, and Our Environment

"Deadly Deception" presents a fascinating look at the power of politics, business, and image, and the effect those now have on our environment. Filmmaker Chasnoff delivers a powerful, well-balanced documentary that's still relevant today, and demonstrates the ability of grassroots campaigns to achieve incredible goals. Interviews with people who suffer the effects of radiation exposure are interspersed with snippets of G.E.'s television ads from the past, offering the viewer a visceral understanding of heretofore under-reported problems. Interweaving the past and present Ms. Chasnoff captures the irony of the situation succinctly, and provides a powerful, if painful, message in the process.

Presented on videotape, the documentary has clear audio and a suitable soundtrack; its video quality is good except that interviews are noticeably spliced together. However, that doesn't detract from the film or its message. A few graphic scenes might make some viewers uncomfortable.

As an educational film, "Deadly Deception" can inspire high-schoolers and college students to know the facts of environmental hazards caused by big industry, as well as how effective organizations have been and can be.
